Most investors meet the semiconductor industry through the companies whose names appear on the finished chip. But every leading-edge transistor and every stacked memory cell is carved and coated by machines from a very short list of suppliers, and Lam Research (LRCX) sits near the front of that list. Any serious Lam Research stock analysis has to start there: this is not a chip designer and not a foundry, but a maker of the etch and deposition equipment that turns a blank silicon wafer into a working device, plus a large service business attached to the tools it has already sold. That combination shapes how the revenue behaves, where the margins come from, and which risks matter.
What Lam Research Actually Sells
Chipmaking is a layering process. A pattern is printed onto the wafer, unwanted material is removed, new material is laid down, and the cycle repeats hundreds of times. Lithography — the printing step — is dominated by ASML Holding (ASML). Lam concentrates on the two steps on either side of it: etch, which removes material with extraordinary precision, and deposition, which adds films sometimes only a few atoms thick. Its closest peers in those adjacent markets are Applied Materials (AMAT), which competes across a broader spread of process steps, and KLA Corporation (KLAC), which specializes in inspection and metrology rather than material removal.
What makes etch and deposition structurally interesting is that they scale with device complexity rather than with wafer count alone. When 3D NAND memory stacks more layers, or when logic transistors move to gate-all-around structures, the number of etch and deposition steps per wafer rises. Lam has built its product roadmap around exactly those inflections. Its Akara conductor etch platform, introduced in February 2025, is aimed at gate-all-around transistors, 6F2 DRAM and 3D NAND. Its ALTUS Halo system was the first atomic layer deposition tool to put molybdenum into high-volume production, a metal chosen to reduce interconnect resistance as structures shrink. Both products won 2026 Edison Awards in the microelectronics category. Cryogenic etch, which uses very low temperatures to cut deeper and straighter holes through thick stacks, addresses the same problem from the other direction.
The practical point for a shareholder is that Lam's addressable content per wafer is not fixed. It moves with what its customers are trying to build, which is why the company's revenue can grow faster than industry wafer starts in years when the technology roadmap is doing the heavy lifting.
The Fiscal 2026 Numbers
Lam's fiscal year ends in late June, so the most recent full picture comes from fiscal 2026, which closed on 28 June 2026 and was reported on 29 July 2026.
- Fiscal 2026 revenue: $23.23 billion, up 26% from $18.44 billion in fiscal 2025.
- Fiscal 2026 diluted earnings per share: $5.82, up 41% from $4.13.
- Fourth-quarter revenue (quarter ended 28 June 2026): $6.72 billion, up 15% sequentially and 30% year over year — a fourth consecutive record quarter.
- Fourth-quarter gross margin: 52.0% on a non-GAAP basis (51.7% GAAP), up from 49.9% in the March quarter and the highest quarterly reading in twenty years.
- Fourth-quarter operating margin: 38.4% non-GAAP, up from roughly 35% in the prior quarter.
- Fourth-quarter diluted EPS: $1.82 non-GAAP, $1.81 GAAP.
Two things stand out in that set. The first is the pace of sequential acceleration: a 15% quarter-on-quarter revenue gain in a business of this size implies demand arriving faster than a normal replacement cycle would deliver. The second is that margins expanded at the same time. Gross margin at 52% is unusual for capital equipment, where a richer mix of tools normally comes with heavier cost of goods. The company attributed the improvement to product mix and to the growing weight of higher-margin service revenue, and it guided for that level to persist.
Guidance for the September 2026 quarter, ending 27 September 2026, was $8.10 billion in revenue plus or minus $400 million, with diluted EPS of $2.15 plus or minus $0.15, gross margin of 52.0% plus or minus one percentage point, and operating margin of 39.5% plus or minus one point. That midpoint would represent growth of more than 20% on the June quarter. Guidance is a forecast, not a result, and equipment orders can be pushed or pulled by a single large customer's fab schedule — but the direction and the size of the step are what the market has been reacting to.
The Installed Base and Where Recurring Revenue Comes From
The part of Lam's model that gets least attention in a typical Lam Research stock analysis is the Customer Support Business Group, or CSBG. Every tool Lam ships stays in a customer fab for many years and needs spare parts, preventive maintenance, consumable replacement and periodic upgrades. Lam's installed base now exceeds 100,000 process chambers worldwide, and CSBG monetizes it.
In the June 2026 quarter CSBG generated $2.47 billion of revenue, up 17% from $2.11 billion in the March quarter and up 43% from $1.73 billion a year earlier. At that run rate the service business alone is larger than many standalone semiconductor companies, and it behaves differently from systems sales: it tracks the number of chambers running and the intensity at which they run, not the timing of new fab construction. That gives the overall revenue line a floor that a pure equipment vendor would not have.
Upgrades sit in an interesting middle ground. When a memory maker wants more capacity without building a new fab, converting existing NAND or DRAM lines to a newer node is cheaper and faster than greenfield construction, and those conversions run through CSBG rather than through new system shipments. Lam has also been automating preventive maintenance tasks, extending tools originally deployed in NAND fabs into DRAM, which the company describes as an early-stage rollout across the installed base. Whether that translates into durable pricing power on service contracts is one of the more consequential open questions in the business.
Customer Mix, Geography and the China Question
Equipment demand is lumpy because it is concentrated. In the June 2026 quarter, memory accounted for 46% of systems revenue — a record share — split evenly between NAND at 23% and DRAM at 23%, with NAND revenue dollars more than doubling sequentially. Foundry made up 44% and logic and other the remaining 10%.
That memory weighting cuts both ways. Memory capital spending is historically the most cyclical part of the industry: when DRAM and NAND pricing is strong, producers such as Micron Technology (MU) and its Korean peers expand aggressively, and when pricing turns, capital budgets are cut quickly and deeply. The current cycle is being driven by high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators, which requires more wafers per bit and more process steps per wafer than conventional DRAM. Investors weighing Lam Research shares are, to a meaningful degree, taking a view on how long that memory investment cycle runs. The demand at the far end of that chain comes from the accelerator designers themselves, where Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Broadcom (AVGO) are two of the businesses whose order books shape the memory and logic capacity Lam's tools are bought to build.
Geographically, the June quarter split was Taiwan at 27% — a record dollar level — China at 26% and Korea at 20%. The China figure deserves particular attention because of how far it has moved. In the September 2025 quarter, the first quarter of fiscal 2026, China represented roughly 43% of revenue at $2.28 billion. By the June 2026 quarter that share had fallen to 26%, and the company has indicated China's contribution would sit below 30% across 2026 as export restrictions limit what can be shipped to certain domestic Chinese customers.
The notable feature of that transition is that total revenue grew strongly while the China share nearly halved. Demand from Taiwan, Korea and the United States more than replaced it. That is evidence about the breadth of the current cycle, though it does not make the regulatory exposure disappear: export licensing rules can change with limited notice, and Lam's own risk disclosures list export controls and trade regulation alongside customer concentration, industry cyclicality and supply-chain disruption.
Balance Sheet, Cash Returns and Valuation
Lam ended fiscal 2026 with $5.60 billion in gross cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash, and generated $1.27 billion of free cash flow in the June quarter alone. Deferred revenue — cash collected ahead of recognized sales, and a rough forward indicator — rose to $2.43 billion, an increase of $213 million on the quarter.
Capital returns have leaned heavily toward buybacks. Across fiscal 2026 the company repurchased $3.85 billion of stock, including net share settlement on employee equity, and paid $1.27 billion in dividends. In the June quarter specifically it returned $571 million, comprising $246 million of repurchases and $325 million of dividends. The declared quarterly dividend is $0.26 per share; the payment declared on 21 May 2026 was made on 8 July 2026. Against a share price of $314.00 on 21 August 2026 and a market capitalization of roughly $390 billion, an annualized $1.04 dividend represents a yield of about 0.3%. This is a company that returns cash primarily by shrinking the share count, not by paying income.
On valuation, the arithmetic is straightforward even if the interpretation is not. At $314.00 against fiscal 2026 diluted EPS of $5.82, the trailing price-to-earnings multiple is approximately 54 times. A trailing P/E measures what the market is paying today for a year of earnings already reported; it says nothing on its own about whether those earnings are sustainable. For a cyclical capital equipment supplier the multiple is awkward to read, because peak-cycle earnings usually carry low multiples and trough earnings carry high ones. The September guidance midpoint of $2.15 in quarterly EPS, if annualized, would put the forward multiple materially lower than the trailing one.
Risks and What to Watch
Several specific things would change the picture, in either direction.
- Wafer fab equipment spending. Industry capital spending for calendar 2026 has been characterized as running in the low $150 billion range. Revisions to that number, up or down, flow through to Lam's addressable market directly.
- Memory pricing. With memory at a record 46% of systems revenue, a downturn in DRAM or NAND pricing would hit Lam's order book with a lag of a quarter or two. Watch memory makers' announced capital budgets, not just their earnings.
- CSBG growth rate. Service revenue growing 43% year over year is not a steady-state figure. If it decelerates toward the growth rate of the installed base itself, the margin support it currently provides would soften.
- Export policy. Further restrictions, or a relaxation, would move the China line again. The company has demonstrated it can grow through a halving of China's revenue share, but that was against an unusually strong backdrop elsewhere.
- Gross margin durability. A 52% gross margin is a twenty-year high. Whether it reflects a permanent mix shift or a favorable moment in the cycle is testable over the next several quarters.
- Customer concentration. A small number of customers account for a large share of revenue, so one delayed fab program can visibly move a quarter.
What This Means for Following the Story
Lam Research enters fiscal 2027 with record revenue, its highest gross margin in two decades, a service business compounding at a rate well above the systems business, and a guided September quarter that would extend the growth streak. It also carries the structural features of a capital equipment supplier: concentrated customers, cyclical end markets, and a regulatory overlay on a large geographic segment.
The useful frame is not whether the recent numbers were good — they plainly were — but which of them are cycle and which are structure. The rising step-count in etch and deposition as devices become more complex is structural. The 100,000-chamber installed base and the service revenue attached to it are structural. Record memory intensity and a twenty-year-high gross margin are, on the evidence available, more likely cyclical. Tracking those two categories separately, quarter by quarter, is how the story stays legible as the numbers move.
